Copenhagen Central Station, Forecourt upgrade
Copenhagen, Denmark

Gottlieb Paludan Architects, in collaboration with Grontmij and Gunver Hansen, have renewed the forecourt at Copenhagen Central Station to improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.

In connection with a complete refurbishment of the concrete and bridge structures around the railway trench at Copenhagen Central Station, the areas around the station were also refurbished.

The access roads basically follow the previous layout, but better accommodate vulnerable road users. More efficient drop-off areas have been created, while car parking has been reduced. A more regular cycle path, sidewalks and far more and better bicycle parking have been established.

Accessibility

Guiding lines and ramps are designed according to the latest principles. In addition, a new lighting concept has been introduced on the forecourt and at the entrances to the main station. The forecourt has a new granite paving in pavement stone and rectangular tiles. The background to the choice of material was the desire to create a character that promotes considerate car traffic and has a material quality that reflects the listed status and architectural value of Copenhagen Central Station.

Everyone should be able to move through our shared public spaces and buildings in a safe and dignified way. In complex environments such as stations, terminals, and other public transport hubs, universal design is not just a feature – it’s a fundamental design principle that ensures equal access and high functionality for all, regardless of physical or cognitive ability.
