Metro & Railway
Well-functioning metro and railway systems play a key role in creating coherence in people’s everyday lives – and in connecting cities with the countryside. At Gottlieb Paludan Architects, we develop and design metro and railway projects to make public transport as efficient and attractive as possible – for as many people as possible.
With many years of experience, we create solutions that combine functionality and aesthetics. We help shape numerous aspects of transport infrastructure – from stations and station surroundings to bridges, transport hubs, technical facilities, feasibility studies and alignment projects.
Our approach
By bringing interdisciplinary expertise into play, we are able to highlight the significance and visual impact of mobility solutions in both urban environments and open landscapes. This includes supporting decisions on route alignment and communicating potential impacts to decision-makers and the public.
With a holistic approach, we ensure that projects are integrated into the overall urban development plans, coordinated with housing, commercial areas and recreational facilities — creating coherent and well-planned urban environments. We design solutions that are robust and easy to maintain over time and contribute to the coordination of all disciplines within a unified architectural framework.
Public transport systems must be efficient, attractive and future-proof
Overall, public transport systems must be safe and reliable, attractive and secure, and designed with the future in mind. Therefore, we focus on three main themes in our work process: Functionality and Efficiency, Aesthetic Quality and Sustainability.
Functionality and efficiency
We design with the user's needs at the centre. By understanding traffic patterns, flow and behaviour, we aim to create intuitive and easily navigable spaces. This not only improves the passenger experience, but also optimises the efficiency of the transport network, reducing congestion and minimising waiting times.
Aesthetic Quality
We strive to create stations, stops and routes that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. This improves the visual experience for users, minimises landscape impacts and creates attractive urban environments. We work hard to integrate the visual identity of transport systems architecturally into projects so that the transport system and architecture support each other and are perceived as a unified aesthetic.
Sustainability
When relevant in the assignments or for our clients, we work with sustainability systems such as BREEAM Infrastructure or Infra LCA. We design solutions that are inclusive and accessible to all, with a special focus on creating safety and social inclusion. With our interdisciplinary skills, we translate green development plans into concrete landscape projects to increase biodiversity along transport corridors, for example.

We prioritise dialogue and collaboration to ensure that the client's vision and needs are central to our work. Our goal is always to deliver solutions that both fulfil functional needs and create added value through thoughtful design.
We perform flow and capacity analyses, BIM modelling and sustainability assessments to ensure that our solutions are both functional and future-proof. If needed, we utilise working methods and certification systems such as BREEAM Infra or Infra LCA.
With our team of architects, landscape architects and designers, we provide integrated, holistic and multidisciplinary advice that supports the client's vision and fulfils the highest requirements for function and quality.
