Reopening of historic entrance at Copenhagen Central Station

Urban Development & Mobility

Copenhagen Central Station, Reopening of historic staircase
Copenhagen, Denmark

The reopening of the entrance facing Reventlowsgade improves passenger flow and create more security in and around the station.

The project, which was carried out in close collaboration with the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces, included the reopening and renovation of the closed entrance and a meticulous reconstruction of the historic staircase. The old staircase was exposed and building parts were analysed by the Danish Technological Institute, which made it possible to recreate the original concrete mix and produce a number of special tiles that are no longer in production.

Historic entrance recreated with modern safety and accessibility requirements

The reopened entrance is designed to meet contemporary safety and accessibility requirements and the staircase is equipped with steel leading edge markings with inlaid contrast markings and plastic anti-slip protection. The stair railing is hand-forged and its historical design has been recreated, but elevated from the original railing to meet modern safety standards. The original floor design is also recreated and updated with guide lines for better accessibility.
The project contributes both to improved functionality and safety for travellers and to the preservation of our architectural heritage.

See our Specialist Knowledge

Listed and historic buildings hold architectural and cultural heritage values that give them a distinct significance in our built environment. They reflect the craftsmanship, aesthetics, and societal conditions of earlier times, while also offering unique and contemporary settings for life, work, and experience. But with these great qualities come special considerations and requirements, making work on listed buildings a complex and highly specialised discipline.
