Litauens Plads transformed into an active center in Copenhagen's neighborhood

Urban Development & Mobility

Litauens Plads
Copenhagen, Denmark

Gottlieb Paludan Architects has helped give Litauens Plads a role as an active place in a Copenhagen bridge neighborhood. In its new form, Litauens Plads, which contains six different smaller urban spaces, will be a home for communities in the neighborhood.

The aim is to create a space in active use that is particularly connected to the nearby institutions and urban life in Saxogade. The square should support both formal and informal activities and the community in the neighborhood. The square should be a good place for local residents to spend time, be used for larger events and build on the intentions of the existing pocket park.

Diverse functions and community at Litauens Plads

The spatial concept for Litauens Plads is based on the complex character of the square. A rhythmic division of the square creates six spaces that offer functions, activities and living options for a variety of users. The six spaces consist of a neighborhood square, an activity square, a ball field, a cultural garden, terraces and a church square in front of Gethsemane Church.

The vision for Litauens Plads is based on an analysis of the square's role in the city and pedagogical knowledge about how children and young people use outdoor spaces.

Everyone should be able to move through our shared public spaces and buildings in a safe and dignified way. In complex environments such as stations, terminals, and other public transport hubs, universal design is not just a feature – it’s a fundamental design principle that ensures equal access and high functionality for all, regardless of physical or cognitive ability.
