Before projects of this scale can be realised, authorities often require an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) – an evaluation of the development’s impact on the environment. Gottlieb Paludan Architects have been in charge of the landscape architecture project for the extension of the road link Route 21 between the Danish cities of Holbæk and Vig.
The task included aesthetic assessments and visualizations of alternative options as part of background studies for the completion of EIA procedures.
The architectural project comprises: • production of an interactive presentation for the road alignment survey on phase 2 of the project • terrain modelling for the placement of surplus soil • design proposals for bridges on the route • the design of rest areas and intermodal facilities • placement and design of car-pooling facilities

As part of the project, GPA has also been responsible for the design of a new scenic rest area at Bjergene near Holbæk. The design of the rest area includes the placement of 600,000 m³ of surplus soil in the form of three lens-shaped hills, organized in a fan shape. The hills are grassy and thus blend into the landscape, while their sharp shape reveals that they are not naturally occurring.
The bridge design addresses the individual elements such as bridge deck, columns, abutments, retaining walls, gabions and bridge laces, and has resulted in a bridge design report.
To ensure landscape considerations, GPA has conducted a study of the landscape types within the planning corridor.
