Park corridor near Royal Arena merges nature and urban life

Urban Development & Mobility

Urban common in the Arena quarter
Ørestad, Denmark

Gottlieb Paludan Architects are the landscape architects designing a parkway in the newly built neighborhood by the Royal Arena in Ørestad South. The parkway through the newly built Arena neighborhood in Ørestad South spans from the open expanses of Kalvebod Fælled to the tight urbanity of Ørestads Boulevard.

Strøget gradually changes character from a green, soft and wild landscape space to a more sharply defined urban space, emphasizing the neighborhood's identity as a place where city, suburb and nature overlap. The green urban space is bordered along the surrounding buildings by a promenade with many seating areas.

With its different types of spaces, Park Street is intended to play a role as an urban community in the neighborhood around the new Royal Arena. Accessibility is important: physical access, of course, but also that the park is robust and spacious for many different users and types of activities.

Blue line and natural planting

Rainwater is led from the roofs of the surrounding buildings to a blue alley that changes character from east to west from an urban water channel in in situ cast concrete to a more scenic gutter at the bottom of the western part of the park alley. In the design of the planting, the focus has been on growing conditions, and the choice of plants has been inspired by the vegetation at Kalvebod Fælled.

Heavy rainfall events are becoming more frequent, presenting growing challenges for cities to manage stormwater effectively. Traditional approaches such as expanding sewer networks are no longer sufficient, making alternative solutions like Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) a necessity. This approach enables water to be managed on the surface while simultaneously reshaping the terrain of cities and landscapes.

Udforsk

Our cities and landscapes must accommodate a wide range of functions, interests, and concerns – from urban development and infrastructure to nature conservation and climate adaptation. This places high demands on the prioritization, planning, and siting of new developments and structures. Urban and landscape analyses provide a comprehensive overview of physical, regulatory, and contextual conditions and form a critical basis for decision-making in the early project stages.
