Extensive restoration of Hillerød's preserved station building

Hillerød Station
Hillerød, Denmark

Gottlieb Paludan Architects is behind a comprehensive renovation of Hillerød's preservation-worthy station building. Hillerød station was inaugurated in 1864 as the terminus for the Northern Railway. Later, the station became a major traffic hub with two local rail platforms and a bus stop north of the station.

The main building is a distinctive building of great cultural and historical significance for the city of Hillerød. As a result of many years without significant use and lack of maintenance, the building's building envelope, interior and installations must be restored. The restoration is carried out with an eye for the building's preservation-worthy qualities.

Connectivity, modernization and historical recreation

The aim of the project is to enable a future connection of the two local rail tracks by demolishing the side buildings of the station building. In addition, the existing station building will be improved for rental purposes, which will serve to revitalize the station area. The side buildings and the small 'intermediate roof' on the track side will be demolished, and the facades will be restored with new brickwork facing the tracks. The original roof decoration will be restored as it adds the original lightness and elegance to the station building.

Listed and historic buildings hold architectural and cultural heritage values that give them a distinct significance in our built environment. They reflect the craftsmanship, aesthetics, and societal conditions of earlier times, while also offering unique and contemporary settings for life, work, and experience. But with these great qualities come special considerations and requirements, making work on listed buildings a complex and highly specialised discipline.

Udforsk

Architecture leaves a lasting mark. When we work with existing buildings, we take on a responsibility – for the resources, for our architectural heritage, and for creating solutions that stand the test of time. Transformation is about breathing new life into the built environment and identifying new purposes for structures that no longer meet current needs. It demands insight, care and a long-term perspective on climate, economy and social value.

Everyone should be able to move through our shared public spaces and buildings in a safe and dignified way. In complex environments such as stations, terminals, and other public transport hubs, universal design is not just a feature – it’s a fundamental design principle that ensures equal access and high functionality for all, regardless of physical or cognitive ability.
