Control Room at Roskilde Waste Incineration
Roskilde, Denmark

The waste management company KARA/NOVEREN has built a new, distinctive building for the incineration plant in Roskilde. In this connection, a new, centrally located control room has been established.

Gottlieb Paludan Architects was responsible for the control room project, which included room layout, interior design and the design of specialized furniture for the control room and surrounding functions. The control room, office, meeting room, kitchen, dining area and other support functions merge into a whole that emphasizes a connection between the control room and the highly distinctive new exterior, characterized by bronze-like metal, large circular openings and a specially developed lighting design.

Control room with oval function and atmospheric lighting

The new control room has high ceilings and is clad with veneered panels. Together with the rust-red speckled floor linoleum and wood concrete ceiling, it gives the control room a pleasant atmosphere, muted acoustics and good light. In the middle of the large floor, the furniture is designed as a continuous oval that houses all control functions. The surfaces of the oval are mainly linoleum with the same natural material character as the floor and wall panels. Operators move inside the oval and monitor operations on the work screens, wall-mounted monitors and a number of instruments in a special wall panel. Through two large windows there is an overview of the huge waste silo. In a frieze between the walls and ceiling, LED luminaires are placed that let white or blue light trickle down the walls. The white light is used from dusk, through the night and until dawn, softly illuminating the veneer walls. During the daytime, the blue light gives the impression that there is a skylight above the ceiling and is experienced as daylight.

See our Specialist Knowledge

Lighting is an indispensable part of our daily lives. It shapes the environments in which we live and work, and has a significant impact on our well-being. When the lighting is right, it supports our activities, creates a sense of security, and enhances the visual experience of the spaces we inhabit. This is why it is crucial that lighting design is planned with care and insight to support both function and aesthetics in our spaces and buildings.
