Flexible bicycle parking solution keeps the bicycles lined up

Flexible bicycle parking at CBS
Frederiksberg, Denmark

Gottlieb Paludan Architects has designed a bicycle parking solution for temporary bicycle parking, in connection with the redesign of the permanent bicycle parking area at Copenhagen Business School.

The flexible bicycle parking solution was developed for Frederiksberg Municipality and CBS, which use the parking solution as a supplement to permanent bicycle parking spaces during special events when extra parking spaces are needed.

The bicycle parking sign is an open source project. This means that anyone is welcome to produce one or more signs themselves. If you are unable to produce the sign yourself, Gottlieb Paludan Architects will be happy to assist you for a modest fee.

A production manual for the bicycle sign can be downloaded at the bottom of the page. The sign may only be produced for personal use and not for commercial use. When using signs and sharing images, CBS, Frederiksberg Municipality and Gottlieb Paludan Architects must be credited.

Conscious material selection and relocatable solution

The bicycle parking signs are made of galvanized steel and can be used to mark a designated area for temporary bicycle parking. The signs’ light blue colour causes them to stand out from the standard urban equipment. Bicycles are parked in between two signs that show the beginning and end of the bicycle parking area. A single sign weighs 45 kg. rendering it durable and easy to move around according to requirements.

The design concept has been tested in 1:1 models.

The parking solution is used as a supplement to the permanent bicycle parking, at future events where there may be need for extra parking spaces.

Broens Gadekøkken – an example of how the design concept can be applied

An example of the use of the open source material can be seen here at Broens Gadekøkken in Copenhagen. Here, it is used to organise bicycles during the high season, when the street kitchen has a particularly large number of visitors.
