Pumping station at Kalvebod Brygge
Copenhagen, Denmark

Gottlieb Paludan Architects is behind an upcoming pumping station at Kalvebod Brygge that will protect the streets of Copenhagen from flooding.

HOFOR wants to build a pumping station at Kalvebod Brygge to discharge cloudburst water into the Port of Copenhagen. The pumping station will be part of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg Municipality's cloudburst plan, where cloudburst water is led from Frederiksberg and Vesterbro to the harbor via an underground cloudburst tunnel to the pumping station, where it is pumped into the harbor.

Pumping station design

The pumping station consists of a large underground section and a building. It is a large technical facility in a central location in the city where many people pass through daily. The building at ground level consists of two circular parts, one low at 4 meters and one high at 6 meters. The two circular volumes interlock and form a whole. The circular building body allows passage and ensures a connection between city and harbor and thus stands out compared to the promenade's other buildings, which are significantly higher, rectangular and shield the passage between city and harbor. The detailing and choice of materials for the pumping station, the floor around it and the lighting strategy are based on the fact that the pumping station is a special place with a special function with space to spend time.

Heavy rainfall events are becoming more frequent, presenting growing challenges for cities to manage stormwater effectively. Traditional approaches such as expanding sewer networks are no longer sufficient, making alternative solutions like Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) a necessity. This approach enables water to be managed on the surface while simultaneously reshaping the terrain of cities and landscapes.

Architecture leaves a lasting mark. When we work with existing buildings, we take on a responsibility – for the resources, for our architectural heritage, and for creating solutions that stand the test of time. Transformation is about breathing new life into the built environment and identifying new purposes for structures that no longer meet current needs. It demands insight, care and a long-term perspective on climate, economy and social value.
