Gottlieb Paludan Architects and blrm Architekt*innen win competition for new U-bahn station in Hamburg
blrm Architekt*innen and Gottlieb Paludan Architects have together won the design competition for a new station on the future Ubahn line U5 in Hamburg. The design is based on the further development and expansion of an existing underground station at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, where the existing qualities are preserved and emphasised through the addition of simple elements.

The concept is based on a respectful and resource-saving approach to the existing building fabric – reduction rather than transformation, addition rather than replacement. The design works with a keen understanding of the cultural value of the post-war metro station. The original design of the station was intended to express the new lifestyle and the city's regained strength. The clear typography, strong colours, distinctive ceiling and column shapes, and detailed interior design gave passengers a strong sense of orientation and conveyed a clear architectural expression.

Over the past decades, the station has undergone several changes, with layers of time documenting its development. The renovation does not seek to recreate a specific period aesthetic, but instead focuses on creating visual and architectural calm on the platforms and mezzanine levels and highlighting the existing spatial values. Secondary architectural elements are removed, and characteristic details such as coloured ceramic tiles and wall reliefs are preserved and highlighted through a few targeted interventions. The result creates a harmonious transition to a modern architecture that respects the original expression.

The four tunnel tubes around which the 1968 station was built will be preserved as a unified spatial whole. A mirrored object above the platform will reinforce the circular design of the tubes and create spatial illusions through light and reflections. The object will also integrate passenger information in a discreet and functional manner. The existing wall coverings with tiles and steel frames will be renovated and supplemented as necessary, and LED lighting, which references the original coffered ceiling, will be added, contributing to a modern but respectful upgrade of the station.
