Delft City Archives
Delft, Holland
The striking brickwork of the new home of the Delft City Archives takes its motif from the bookshelf, and the building's program is clearly visible in the facade.
The City Archive's previous premises were from the 1950s and were no longer large enough to house its collection. At the same time, the old building lacked some technical necessities. In addition to Delft's historical archives, the new building houses a café, a publicly accessible reading room and offices for the archive's staff. These outward-facing functions are located on the ground floor, helping to highlight the public function and importance of the city archive. The masonry relief of the façade connects the building to Delft's tradition of richly worked brick architecture.
