Increased Demand for Electricity Required a New Transformer Station

Energy & Industry

Lindevang Substation
Copenhagen, Denmark

As the neighborhood near the new Flintholm station changed from being a recycling center to becoming part of the city, the need for electricity supply increased.

The existing substation for the Lindevang area consisted of brick buildings from the 1920s and 1960s, located at Dirch Passers Allé, which is the entrance to the area.

Modern masonry with tradition

The natural choice for the building was to continue the site's red brick tradition. As the substation extension was to be placed right next to the sidewalk, almost as a gateway building for both the substation and the new city district, it was natural to give it an expression that would give the site identity, quality and dignity. While old masonry is often full of details and ornamentation, contemporary masonry tends to be minimalist because the shell wall alone must support itself and the details therefore lack a structural justification. At Lindevang Transformer Station, the shell wall facing the sidewalk has a design that is both beautiful and remarkable, plays up to its surroundings and has a memorable character. In simple terms, it is a sawtooth banding in receding courses, interrupted by ordinary running courses.

The low, distinctive wall encloses a building with cable rooms, switchgear and relays.

The higher transformer cells rise above the roof and are equipped with zinc grilles that allow natural ventilation of the waste heat from the large transformers.
