Critical infrastructure encompasses the systems and structures essential to the functioning of our society. These may support economic or social functions, such as health, transport, energy, information, food supply, or security, and architecture plays a central role in many of these domains. When buildings that support critical functions fail to operate, the consequences extend beyond the site itself, potentially compromising public safety or interrupting access to vital resources.

Substations in Stockholm
Stockholm, Sweden
Visualisation
Gottlieb Paludan Architects' proposal has won the design competition to design the future substations in Stockholm, Sweden.
Electricity supply plays a crucial role in the Sweden of the future, where industry, transportation and cities are electrified to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The expansion of the electricity grid requires a more thoughtful integration of substations into the urban landscape. The design proposal therefore follows modular premises and appears as a discreet technical building with a soft design language that can be easily integrated into different urban contexts.
Despite the different customization options of the substations, they follow a common set of design principles based solely on the Stockholm design language. This is reflected in the color palette of blue-gray and green-gray, the choice of metal and wood materials, and characteristic forms of eaves or canopies from both classic and modern architecture. The choice of materials, wood and recyclable metal, is also based on their maintenance-friendly properties. The design of the substation aims to evoke positive associations and contribute to the local community by offering weather protection, bicycle parking and a positive narrative about Stockholm's priorities - local roots, people and sustainability.
