Lundtofte, Denmark

Topsøe Fuel Cell’s new materials laboratory in Lundtofte, north of Copenhagen, is part of a larger project involving the renovation of a 14,000 m² industrial building from 1981 for the SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) project.

The project, Building 73, Materials Laboratory, includes the transformation of 1,200 m² in a former factory building made up of various types of untreated concrete elements. Key priorities for the transformation have been improving energy efficiency, daylight access, and flexibility.

A series of tall windows have been added to the south facade, providing views of the surroundings and allowing daylight to penetrate further into the building. The interior, which requires substantial installations, is designed with simplicity and high flexibility. Room separations are created using floor-to-ceiling glass partitions, enhancing transparency in the deep building. The facades have been insulated internally, and walls are painted white. Gottlieb Paludan Architects were responsible for the architectural work and construction management, in close collaboration with TOFC’s management and with MOE as the engineering consultant.
The aim of the SOFC project is to develop and produce compact and environmentally friendly fuel cell units.

See our Specialist Knowledge

Architecture leaves a lasting mark. When we work with existing buildings, we take on a responsibility – for the resources, for our architectural heritage, and for creating solutions that stand the test of time. Transformation is about breathing new life into the built environment and identifying new purposes for structures that no longer meet current needs. It demands insight, care and a long-term perspective on climate, economy and social value.
