Waste sorting system for Copenhagen City Hall
Copenhagen, Denmark

Gottlieb Paludan Architects developed design solutions for waste sorting at Copenhagen City Hall.

In 2018, the City of Copenhagen decided to implement a green transition of the city hall. For this process, Gottlieb Paludan Architects is responsible for designing of a new indoor waste-sorting solution.

As the waste containers are placed in areas where they have a significant visual impact, great emphasis has been placed on ensuring that the solution blends in with the building in a way that respects Martin Nyrup's materials and attention to detail. Martin Nyrup not only designed the building, he also designed the accompanying furnishings, from furniture and wall decorations to floor coverings and door handles, which now frame a modern workplace.

Waste sorting with standard and extended solutions

The standard solution has three compartments for biodegradable materials, plastic and other/residual waste, whereas an optional expanded version has a compartment for glass. Standard icons are used on the waste bin lids, which are designed to facilitate easy removal and insertion of bags. The waste bins are modular so they can be used both singly or in groups of two or three. In addition to the new indoor solution, Gottlieb Paludan also adapted the existing waste bins in the garden.

The design meets the need for a flexible and transportable solution.

The waste bin stand controls the sorting, functioning as modules that can stand alone or be combined in groups of two or three.

A unique feature of the waste bins is the use of leather and lacquered steel which must blend in and create a noble, nature-like appearance in harmony with the wide selection of woods and variety of surfaces in the building.

See our Specialist Knowledge

Listed and historic buildings hold architectural and cultural heritage values that give them a distinct significance in our built environment. They reflect the craftsmanship, aesthetics, and societal conditions of earlier times, while also offering unique and contemporary settings for life, work, and experience. But with these great qualities come special considerations and requirements, making work on listed buildings a complex and highly specialised discipline.
