Listed and Historic Buildings

Listed and historic buildings hold architectural and cultural heritage values that give them a distinct significance in our built environment. They reflect the craftsmanship, aesthetics, and societal conditions of earlier times, while also offering unique and contemporary settings for life, work, and experience. But with these great qualities come special considerations and requirements, making work on listed buildings a complex and highly specialised discipline.

Respecting the past while meeting today’s needs

At Gottlieb Paludan Architects, we work closely with property owners and public authorities to renew listed buildings in ways that honour their original qualities. We aim for solutions that preserve and enhance the building’s distinct character, while accommodating today’s demands for functionality, accessibility, and energy efficiency. Our projects are defined by their ability to strengthen the lasting value of buildings – functionally, culturally, and architecturally – and to deliver holistic solutions that respect the past and extend into the future.

Preservation demands insight and experience

Work on listed buildings requires specialised knowledge and sensitivity. Any intervention must be carefully designed to maintain the integrity of the whole as well as the details – from façades and spatial layouts to surfaces and technical installations. Every choice affects the heritage value of the building, and both process and outcome must meet approval by the relevant authorities.

At the same time, the building must support contemporary use. This may involve improving access, lowering energy consumption without compromising aesthetics, or identifying robust ways to support new functions.

We provide advice throughout all project phases – from initial assessments and heritage value analysis to detailed design, tendering, and construction management. With a collaborative approach, we develop solutions that balance regulatory requirements, user needs, and the building’s inherent qualities.
